Carol Zastoupil

Curls, Swirls, Whirls

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Kansas City, Mo. On Friday, December 4th, 2015 from 5-10 pm the Todd Weiner Gallery will host the exhibition opening for “Curls, Swirls, & Whirls” by Carol Zastoupil which will run through Tuesday, December 28th, 2015.

“Curls, Swirls, & Whirls” features a collection of Zastoupil’s inviting landscapes. Each of these imagined scapes is arranged with elements of Zastoupil’s cannon. Conical trees, lush vegetation, rolling hills, and curvy roads construct pleasurable places that do not aim to replicate the natural world. Each canvas is an opportunity for Zastoupil to express what she describes as “the shimmer” in nature.

“Ridge Lea” is one of the larger works in “Curls, Swirls, & Whirls”. This oil on canvas work highlights Zastoupil’s loose brushwork and flat application of paint. The brightly painted rolling hills in the middle of the scape aid in continuing the sinuous lines running the vertical length of the landscape. Above, billowing clouds reinforce the dreamy quality of the pastel pastoral scene. Zastoupil employs a pink palm as to remind us that we are not gazing in a typical Kansas hillside.

Zastoupil has exhibited widely throughout the Kansas City area. She has won numerous awards in juried exhibitions. Her artwork has recently been added into the Collection of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. “Curls, Swirls, & Whirls” opening at the Todd Weiner Gallery will offer a chance to see many of Zastoupil’s wide-ranging scapes.
