FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Kansas City, Mo. On Friday, May, 6th 2016 from 5-10 PM the Todd Weiner Gallery will host the exhibition opening for Tempered by Martin Cail which will run through Saturday, May 28th, 2016.
Cail’s newest body of work magnifies the medium he introduced in his previous exhibition at the Todd Weiner Gallery entitled Storms and Forms in January of 2015. In Tempered, Cail has manipulated simple abstract forms and vibrantly layered lines to create visually dynamic compositions. Each of the works utilizes pure pigment ink to create captivating pops of unadulterated color. In a world of over pixilation in the digital age with a myriad of screens, Cail reclaims the power of coloration.
Cail stresses that his process is to find a balance between control and letting go. Although the works appear to have materialized naturally, Cail subtly includes his mark to show manipulation of medium. Cail, a Kansas City native, graduated with a BFA in ceramics from the University of Central Missouri and an MFA in sculpture from Ohio State. Years of work as a preparator for both the Nelson and Kemper and continued growth as an artist have culminated in Cail’s new role as a colorist.
Davey’s Light, a featured piece in Tempered is a fiery tribute to the depth and complexity of the color red. A large central form is engulfed by actively flowing streams escaping into the upper right hand corner of the panel. Each organic curve is met by another, ultimately layering thin sheets of pigment into a striking exploration of red values.
